Kairos Moment – For Such A Time As This
When God’s Timing Meets Your Obedience
Key Scripture — Ephesians 5:15–17
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
Throughout this journey, we have watched God work through ordinary people in extraordinary moments.
Esther had to approach the king.
Abraham had to leave what was familiar.
Joseph had to remain faithful through years of preparation.
Moses had to answer, “Here I am.”
David had to walk toward the giant.
Peter had to get out of the boat.
Paul had to accept God’s redirection.
Different people.
Different circumstances.
Different assignments.
But each faced the same essential question:
Will I recognize what God is doing and respond in obedience?
That is the challenge of a Kairos moment.
It is possible to experience a God-given opportunity and fail to recognize its significance.
So how do genuine disciples recognize their Kairos moments?
1. Know the Word
Discernment begins with Scripture.
Jesus said:
“You study the Scriptures diligently… These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.” — John 5:39
We cannot accurately discern God’s direction while neglecting God’s Word.
The Bereans were commended because they “examined the Scriptures every day” (Acts 17:11).
We need believers who are biblically proficient—not merely familiar with favorite verses, but grounded enough in Scripture to recognize truth and reject deception.
But remember:
Biblical proficiency is not the destination.
Scripture points us to Jesus Christ.
We study the Word so that we may know Him, become like Him, recognize His truth, and obey Him.
2. Remain in Christ
Jesus said:
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” — John 15:4
Kairos discernment grows out of relationship with Christ.
We can become so focused on finding our purpose, discovering our assignment, or looking for the next opportunity that we neglect the One who gives purpose to everything.
Before asking:
“Lord, what do You want me to do?”
we should also be asking:
“Lord, am I remaining close to You?”
Genuine discipleship is not merely doing things for Jesus.
It is living in union with Jesus.
The branch bears fruit because it remains connected to the Vine.
3. Pray for Wisdom
James tells us:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God.” — James 1:5
Not every opportunity is a divine assignment.
Not every open door is God’s door.
Not every delay means no.
Not every closed door means never.
That is why we pray.
We need wisdom that comes from God rather than simply reacting to emotion, pressure, fear, ambition, or popular opinion.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
A discerning disciple learns to pray:
“Lord, help me see this moment from Your perspective.”
4. Understand the Times
First Chronicles describes the men of Issachar as those:
“who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.” — 1 Chronicles 12:32
That combination matters.
They understood the times and knew what to do.
Awareness without obedience produces spectators.
Knowledge without action can produce complacency.
Discernment should lead to faithful response.
We must understand the world we live in without letting it define how we think.
Romans 12:2 tells us:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
We should understand the times through the lens of God’s Word, not interpret God’s Word through the lens of the times.
5. Pay Attention to What God Has Placed Before You
Sometimes we are looking so intensely for something extraordinary that we overlook the assignment directly in front of us.
A conversation.
A neighbor.
A struggling believer.
A new Christian who needs discipleship.
A coworker asking spiritual questions.
A family member who needs forgiveness.
A ministry opportunity.
Someone who needs to hear the Gospel.
Kairos moments are not always dramatic.
Sometimes they arrive disguised as an ordinary interruption.
Remember Moses.
He was tending sheep.
Remember David.
He was delivering food.
Remember Peter.
He was sitting in a boat.
God often places Kingdom opportunities in the middle of ordinary life.
Pay attention.
6. Test What You Discern
Spiritual discernment does not mean treating every feeling as God’s voice.
Scripture tells us:
“Test everything; hold fast what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21
Ask:
Does this agree with Scripture?
Does it reflect the character of Christ?
Will obedience honor God?
Is this drawing me toward Christ or toward myself?
Will this help me love God and serve others?
Am I seeking God’s glory or my own recognition?
God will never lead us contrary to His revealed Word.
Genuine disciples test impressions rather than simply trusting impulses.
7. When God Makes It Clear—Obey
Eventually discernment must become decision.
Esther could have continued praying without approaching the king.
Moses could have remained at the burning bush.
David could have discussed Goliath without walking onto the battlefield.
Peter could have admired Jesus from inside the boat.
Paul could have received the Macedonian vision and remained where he was.
But each Kairos moment required obedience.
James 1:22 reminds us:
“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.”
There comes a moment when prayer must become action.
When preparation must become participation.
When information must become transformation.
When faith must develop feet.
Genuine disciples obey.
Don’t Miss Jesus While Looking for the Moment
This may be the most important lesson of the entire series.
We can become fascinated with Kairos moments.
Divine appointments.
Open doors.
Purpose.
Calling.
Opportunities.
But none of those things is the ultimate destination.
Jesus confronted people who diligently searched Scripture yet failed to come to the One Scripture revealed.
We must never make the same mistake.
The purpose of recognizing a Kairos moment is not simply to discover what God wants us to do.
It is to follow the One God has called us to know.
Jesus Christ.
The opportunity is not the destination.
The calling is not the destination.
The ministry is not the destination.
The miracle is not the destination.
Even the Kairos moment is not the destination.
Jesus is.
Your Kairos Moment May Be Now
Perhaps you have been waiting for something dramatic.
But what if your Kairos moment is already in front of you?
Perhaps God is calling you to:
Return to His Word.
Rededicate your life.
Forgive someone.
Share the Gospel.
Disciple a new believer.
Serve faithfully.
Step out of the boat.
Use what He placed in your hand.
Walk toward the giant.
Accept His redirection.
Or simply come closer to Jesus.
Do not allow fear to make you retreat.
Do not allow comfort to keep you seated.
Do not allow disappointment to disengage you.
Do not allow the world’s narrative to drown out God’s truth.
Search the Scriptures.
Remain in Christ.
Pray for wisdom.
Understand the times.
Pay attention.
Test everything.
And when God’s Word makes obedience clear—
Respond.
Because a Kairos moment recognized but never obeyed becomes an opportunity missed.
⸻
Our Signature
Kairos is the moment.
Scripture reveals the truth.
Discipleship is the response.
Jesus is the destination.
God’s glory is the goal.
⸻
Reflection
- Am I spending enough time in Scripture to recognize truth when competing voices surround me?
- Am I seeking God’s assignment more than I am seeking Jesus Himself?
- What ordinary opportunity has God already placed in front of me?
- Is there something Scripture has made clear that I continue delaying?
- Who might encounter Jesus through my obedience?
- If this is my Kairos moment, how will I respond?
Key Truth
Recognizing a Kairos moment requires more than noticing an opportunity. Genuine disciples search Scripture, remain in Christ, pray for wisdom, understand the times, test what they discern, and respond in obedient faith—always remembering that Jesus, not the opportunity, is the destination.
Personal Response
Today I will not merely ask: “Lord, what is my Kairos moment?”
I will ask: “Lord Jesus, how can I follow You faithfully in this moment?”
I will search His Word. I will remain in Christ. I will listen prayerfully. I will test what I discern against Scripture. I will pay attention to the people God has placed around me.
And when obedience becomes clear:
I will respond.
Not for recognition. Not for personal advancement. Not to build my kingdom.
But because I belong to Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the universe,
Thank You for every moment, every opportunity, every open door, every closed door, and every divine appointment You use to shape my life. Give me wisdom to recognize Your timing. Give me a hunger for Your Word so that I may become biblically proficient, spiritually discerning, and firmly grounded in truth. Keep me from being shaped by the world’s narrative when it contradicts Your Word. Make me like the Bereans, searching the Scriptures. Give me the wisdom of the men of Issachar—to understand the times and know what to do. But Father, never allow my pursuit of knowledge, calling, purpose, or opportunity to become greater than my pursuit of Jesus Christ.
Teach me to remain in Him. When You say wait, give me patience. When You say come, help me get out of the boat. When You say go, give me courage. When You redirect me, give me humility to follow. And when You place someone before me who needs the Gospel, encouragement, truth, or discipleship, help me recognize that moment and faithfully respond. Move me from information to transformation. From spectatorship to participation. From comfort to obedience.
And from simply being a believer who knows about Jesus to becoming a genuine disciple who knows Him, follows Him, becomes like Him, obeys Him, and helps others do the same. May every Kairos moment You entrust to me ultimately point someone toward Jesus Christ.
For:
The battle is Yours. The victory is through Christ.
The obedience is ours.
And the glory belongs to You alone.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
The Destination Is Jesus.
To God Alone Be The Glory!
