Numbers 6:22-27 – The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 “‘”The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. “’27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” [1]
Devotional
In this passage, the Lord instructs Moses to bless the Israelites. The word bless” can be translated as happy, increase in joy, or peacefulness. It is a great privilege to live a blessed life, especially during chaotic seasons of life. As we reflect on this passage, we may ask ourselves, “What are the requirements for being blessed by God?” Three key points come to mind: obedience, total dependency, and relationship.
First, obedience means responding and acting as we are told. In this passage, Moses relayed the Lord’s message to Aaron and his sons, who then blessed the people as instructed. A blessed life is one that finds favor in the sight of God and men. Those who are blessed emotionally, spiritually, and relationally are able to trust God, knowing that He will answer their prayers and protect them from harm. When God blesses us, it continues from generation to generation.
Second, total dependency on the Lord means relying on Him for all our needs. As verse 25 says, “May the Lord shine His face upon you and be gracious to you.” When we carry the shining light of Jesus, our lives are transformed, our hearts are filled with love, compassion, and kindness. We are able to share this light with others, bringing them out of darkness and into the blessed life we enjoy.
Lastly, a relationship with God is essential for a blessed life. As verse 26 says, “May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.” God wants us to have an intimate relationship with Him, which can only be achieved through spending time with Him. This deepening relationship leads to a mature spiritual life and a peace of mind that can only be found in God. When we bless others, we put God’s name on them, and He will bless them.
In conclusion, living a blessed life is a great privilege that requires obedience, total dependency on the Lord, and a deepening relationship with Him. May we seek to live a life that is pleasing to Him and enjoy the blessings that come from being in His presence.
