Spiritual Authenticity

By Rev. Keith Howard

Scripture: “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”1 John 3:18 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

This morning, at breakfast on November 12, 2025, a brother in Christ and Pastor from Gulfport, Mississippi, shared a timely conversation on the topic of “Spiritual Authenticity.” The discussion centered on the idea that genuine love for God must always be reflected in authentic love for others. The foundation of ministry effectiveness—and even our personal witness—hinges on observable sincerity, consistent obedience, and ongoing personal repentance.

Authenticity in the spiritual life is not about perfection; it’s about honest alignment between what we profess and what we practice. The Apostle John reminds believers that love is not proven through words alone, but through actions grounded in truth. In the early church, hypocrisy and false teaching were common threats, so John pressed believers to ensure that their external behavior matched their internal conviction. The same truth applies today—our ministry, families, and communities depend on visible integrity.

Central Role of Spiritual Authenticity

Authentic faith produces visible fruit. Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits”(Matthew 7:16). True believers don’t just speak of obedience—they live it. Repentance isn’t a one-time event; it’s a lifestyle. The measure of spiritual authenticity is not how loudly (screaming to get a point across, I hate when people scream at me, they are actually mad, and say that it is the Holy Spirit, Jesus never yells at me. ~ why do you scream at your sheep? Matthew 11:28) one proclaims faith, but how consistently one walks in love, humility, and obedience.

When a person or ministry operates without love or integrity, it raises legitimate questions about the depth of that faith. As James wrote, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17). Sincere faith will always lead to sincere action.

Impact on Ministry Renewal

As churches seek renewal and reform, spiritual authenticity must lead the way. The proposed changes in ministry are not merely organizational—they are transformational. God is calling His people to move beyond surface-level programs and into genuine community where love, repentance, and accountability are evident. (This is called discipleship)

Authentic leaders model what they preach. They are transparent about their weaknesses, quick to repent when wrong, and courageous enough to confront sin with grace. This kind of authenticity inspires trust and produces disciples who walk in humility and truth.

Paul urged the Corinthian church to “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5). In the same spirit, ministries must regularly inspect their fruit—ensuring that their structures, relationships, and motives reflect Christ, not culture. (I have become a tree inspector)

Authenticity Across Relationships

In a world divided by race, denomination, and ideology, authentic relationships serve as a powerful witness to the reconciling work of Christ. True authenticity embraces confession, accountability, and reconciliation. The church must become a place where repentance is not feared but welcomed—where honesty and love heal and unity becomes the visible fruit of the Spirit.

Jesus prayed, “That they may all be one… so that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:21). Unity is the fruit of authenticity; it cannot be faked or fabricated. If you have not embraced what Paul has said in 2 Corinthians 2:15, you need to repent because this is a command, not a discussion. “Ethnic hatred has been dissolved by the crucifixion of his precious body on the cross. The legal code that stood condemning every one of us has now been repealed by His (Jesus’) command. His triune essence has made peace between us by starting over—forming one new race of humanity, Jews and non-Jews fused together in himself!” I don’t care what translation you read it means the same thing. So let’s keep the main thing, the main thing.

Reflection Questions

1. Does your daily walk reflect what you profess to believe?

2. Are there areas where repentance and correction are needed for you—or your ministry—to regain spiritual authenticity?

3. How can your church cultivate deeper accountability and love that transcends barriers?

Closing Prayer

Father, search our hearts and reveal any area where our words do not match our actions. Teach us to love authentically—to serve You with sincerity and humility. Let our ministries be marked by repentance, integrity, and truth, so that the world may see Christ in us. Help us to be one, not in appearance, but in Spirit and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
