“I Exist to Teach—For You to Learn”

By Rev. Keith Howard

Deuteronomy 4:1 & 5:1

Some assignments from God are not temporary—they are identity.

When Moses spoke to Israel on the edge of the Promised Land, he revealed his identity and theirs:

“I teach… that you may learn.”

(Deut. 4:1; 5:1)

  • In Hebrew, the word for teach (limmed) means to form, shape, train, and model truth through practice. Teaching is not simply transferring information—it is shaping someone’s life by walking with them, guiding them, and demonstrating God’s ways.

The word for learn (lamad) means to be shaped by instruction through obedience and repetition. Learning is not passive. It is active participation with God’s Word, allowing truth to reform your choices, habits, and attitudes.

Together, these two words show us something powerful:

🌟Teaching is formation. Learning is transformation.

Moses understood his purpose:

“I exist to teach.”

He also understood Israel’s purpose:

“You exist to learn.”

God still works this way today. He places teachers, mentors, leaders, parents, and pastors in our lives—not to impress us but to form us.

And He calls us to a posture of learning—not to entertain us but to transform us.

Reflection Questions

1. Who has God placed in your life to shape you spiritually?

2. Are you learning with obedience—or just listening with interest?

3. How is God calling you to teach or influence others?

Prayer

Lord, shape me through Your Word and through the teachers You’ve placed in my life. Give me a heart that learns, obeys, and grows. And use me to teach others with humility, passion, and purpose. May my life reflect Your truth, and may I walk in every promise You have prepared for me. Amen.
