Assumptions

By Rev. Keith Howard

Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:16–22

“When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” — Matthew 19:22

Devotional Reflection

The rich young ruler approached Jesus with confidence. He believed he was asking the right question and living the right life. His assumption was simple: If I’ve done enough, I must be close enough.

But Jesus did not challenge his morality—He challenged his master.

This young man wasn’t rejected because he had wealth; he was exposed because wealth had him. Jesus lovingly placed His finger on the one thing the man never considered surrendering. In doing so,

He revealed a truth we often avoid: assumptions collapse in the presence of truth.

Many of us carry unspoken assumptions into our faith. We assume faithfulness equals faith. We assume obedience in some areas compensates for resistance in others. We assume Jesus will affirm what we’ve already decided to keep.

Yet Jesus always invites us beyond assumption and into surrender.

Heart Check

• What assumptions have I made about my spiritual condition?

• What “one thing” might Jesus be inviting me to release?

• Am I following Jesus—or managing Him?

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”

Luke 9:23 “Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.”

James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Prayer

Lord, expose every assumption I’ve allowed to replace surrender. Search my heart and reveal any rival to Your rule. I choose obedience over comfort, truth over tradition, and You over everything. Teach me to follow fully and trust You completely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought

Jesus does not call us to perfection—He calls us to surrender. What we release into His hands is never truly lost.

Turn it over to Jesus. He invites us in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast our cares upon Him, because He cares for us.
