From an Encounter to a Testimony I Devotional #1

By Rev. Keith Howard

Each One, Reach One

Scripture Reading: John 4:1–42; Matthew 28:18–20

Key Scripture — John 4:29 (KJV)

“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”

Devotional

There are moments in life when an ordinary encounter becomes an extraordinary opportunity for God to reveal His purpose. Such was the experience of a Samaritan woman who came to Jacob’s well to draw water, never imagining that her life was about to change forever.

She came seeking water to satisfy a physical thirst, but she encountered Jesus Christ, the One who could satisfy the deepest thirst of her soul.

What began as a simple conversation became a divine appointment.

Jesus knew her history, her struggles, her broken relationships, and her spiritual condition. Yet He did not allow her past to prevent Him from offering her the gift of living water.

This encounter reminds us of an essential truth: Jesus does not wait for us to become perfect before He invites us into a relationship with Him. He meets us where we are, reveals our need for Him, and calls us to a transformed life.

As the conversation unfolded, the woman began to recognize that the One speaking to her was no ordinary man. Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah.

Then something remarkable happened.

John 4:28–29 tells us that she left her water jar, returned to the town, and invited the people to come and see the Man who had revealed the truth about her life.

She came with a water jar, and left with a testimony.

The very woman who came to draw water became a messenger of the living water. Her encounter with Jesus moved her from an ordinary routine into an extraordinary mission.

Notice that she did not attend a theological seminary, complete an evangelism course, or receive an official ministry title before sharing her testimony.

She simply told others about the One she had encountered.

Her message was simple: “Come and see.”

And according to John 4:39, many Samaritans believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony.

What a powerful reminder that God can use one willing person to reach many!

From an encounter to a commission

In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus gives His followers the Great Commission. He declares that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him, and then commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations.

This commission was not reserved for pastors, evangelists, missionaries, or church leaders. It is the responsibility of every follower of Jesus Christ.

We are called not only to introduce people to Jesus but also to help them grow into mature, obedient disciples who will reach others.

The Samaritan woman demonstrates the beginning of that process. She encountered Christ, shared her testimony, and invited others to encounter Him personally. The people of her town eventually declared that they believed because they had heard Jesus for themselves (John 4:42).

Her testimony opened the door, but Jesus became the foundation of their faith.

That is the heart of Each One, Reach One.

Come and see. Then go and tell.

We come to Jesus in faith. We grow in His Word. We go into the world as witnesses of His saving grace. And we encourage others to do the same.

The question is not whether we have a testimony worth sharing. If Jesus Christ has saved us, we have the greatest testimony of all.

The question is whether we are willing to share it.

Imagine what could happen if every believer intentionally reached one person with the Gospel, prayed for that person, walked alongside them, and helped them become a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Our churches would become more than places of gathering. They would become centers of spiritual transformation, evangelism, discipleship, and multiplication.

The mission begins with one.

One conversation. One invitation. One testimony. One person willing to say, “Come and see.”

And through the power of the Holy Spirit, one life can influence generations.

Reflection Questions

  1. When was the last time you shared your personal testimony of encountering Jesus Christ?
  2. Who has God placed in your life who needs to hear the Gospel?
  3. Are you merely attending church, or are you actively participating in Christ’s mission?
  4. How can you help someone move beyond making a decision for Christ to becoming a growing disciple?

A Call to Action

This week, prayerfully identify one person who needs to know Jesus Christ. Begin praying for them by name, look for an opportunity to share your testimony, and invite them to discover the saving grace of Jesus.

Do not underestimate what God can accomplish through one obedient believer.

Each One, Reach One. Come and see. Then go and tell.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to seek and save the lost. Just as You transformed the life of the Samaritan woman, continue to transform our hearts and renew our commitment to Your Great Commission. Lord, forgive us for the times we have remained comfortable in our church pews while people around us desperately need to hear the Gospel. Give us boldness to step out in faith, compassion to see others through Your eyes, wisdom to communicate Your truth, and a genuine desire to make disciples.

Help us recognize the divine appointments You place before us each day. May our testimonies point others not to ourselves, but to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Use each of us to reach one, and may those we reach become faithful disciples who reach others. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
