Matthew 6:22-25, 34 – The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. [1]
At times, our choices may lead us to more troubles than we anticipate. However, God intended for us to lead a joyful and abundant life. It is our rebellious hearts and lack of understanding of God’s nature that tend to cause problems. God is love and loves us so much that He punishes our sins.
We need to ask the Holy Spirit to weed out anything from our lives that does not align with God’s will. Our flesh often desires to control us, leading us to make wrong decisions despite the consequences. Our worst enemy is ourselves. Jesus said that our eye is the lamp that provides light for our body. When our eye is good, our whole body is filled with light, but when our eye is bad, our whole body is filled with darkness. It is crucial to remain alert and watchful constantly and not take God’s grace for granted.
In verse 24, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters, for you will hate one and love the other.” As a Master, God knows every area of our lives that needs reshaping, refining, and restoring. He loves us too much to allow us to lead a life that reflects the liberal ways of the world.
God wants us to live a life that reflects His character, virtues, and essence. Submission and obedience are two essential keys that can help us remain grounded and strong in our faith. A master gives orders, and a servant obeys.
Let us declare, as Joshua did in Joshua 24:15, As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, and choose to serve Him alone. The choice is ours. Psalms 73:26 says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
We must remain in constant intimacy with Jesus and allow God to be the Master of our lives, so we can grow completely in Him and rely on Him for all our needs.
