What Does It Profit a Man?

By, Rev. Keith Howard

Scripture Reading:

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

— Matthew 16:26 (NKJV)

Reflection:

In a world driven by ambition, status, and success, Jesus asks a piercing question that stops us in our tracks:

What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul?

It’s easy to get caught up in the race for more—more money, more likes, more recognition. We chase after temporary things, believing they’ll satisfy a deep longing within us. But the truth is, nothing this world offers can compare to the eternal value of your soul.

Jesus isn’t against ambition or success. He simply wants us to remember what matters most. Your soul—your eternal destiny—is worth more than anything this world could ever give.

Consider This:

  • Are you building your life around things that will last forever—or things that will fade away?
  • What “trade” have you been tempted to make that could cost you spiritually?Judas exchanged his soul for 30 pieces of silver.Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew.Demas forsook Paul because he loved this present world.
  • Are there any areas of your life where God is calling you to let go of worldly gain in order to hold onto Him more fully?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to see clearly. Show me where I’ve chased after the world and forgotten what truly matters. I don’t want to gain the world at the cost of my soul. Teach me to live with eternity in mind. Help me treasure You above all else. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today’s Challenge:

Spend 10 quiet minutes asking God to reveal any area of your life where you’ve placed worldly gain above spiritual growth. Write it down. Then, surrender it to Him—and take one step toward living with eternal purpose today.
