I am presenting a devotional series on the Fundamental Aspects of the Christian Faith, which can be grounded and transformative. Since we are beginning with our Core Beliefs, week one on The Trinity can set the foundation for everything that follows. Week One: The Trinity
By Rev. Keith Howard
Scripture Foundation
- “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19
- “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” — Deuteronomy 6:4
- “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” — 2 Corinthians 13:14
Reflection
The doctrine of the Trinity is at the very heart of our faith. As Christians, we believe in one God who exists in three coequal, coeternal persons:
- God the Father — Creator and Sustainer, the source of all life.
- God the Son (Jesus Christ) — Redeemer, the Word made flesh who lived, died, and rose again for our salvation.
- God, the Holy Spirit — Comforter and Empowerer dwells within believers and leads us into all truth.
Though the word “Trinity” does not appear in Scripture, the reality of God as Father, Son, and Spirit is woven throughout the Bible. From the Father sending the Son (John 3:16), to the Spirit descending at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16–17), to Paul’s blessing over the church (2 Corinthians 13:14), we see the three persons of the Godhead working in perfect unity.
The Trinity reveals God’s relational nature.
Before the world was created, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit lived in perfect love, joy, and fellowship. Out of that love, God created us and invited us into His divine fellowship.
Personal Application
When we pray, worship, and live in obedience, we are responding to the Triune God who is actively at work in our lives:
- We pray to the Father as our loving source.
- We trust in the Son as our Savior and Lord.
- We walk by the Spirit who empowers us to live holy and fruitful lives.
Understanding the Trinity isn’t just about grasping a theological concept — it’s about entering into a relationship with the living God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, thank You for redeeming me through Your sacrifice. Holy Spirit, guide and empower me to live in Your truth and love. Help me to live each day aware of Your presence, worshiping You as the One true God. Amen.
