Nehemiah – Rebuilding Through Prayer and Action

By. Pastor Raja Maqsood

Key Scripture – Nehemiah 2:17
“Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.”

Introduction

The book of Nehemiah is a powerful story of restoration. God used one man with a burdened heart, a praying spirit, and a willing hand to rebuild broken walls and restore God’s people.
Nehemiah teaches us that true restoration begins in prayer, is guided by vision, and fulfilled through action.

1) A Burden That Comes From God
Nehemiah heard about the broken walls of Jerusalem, and his heart was deeply moved.
Nehemiah 1:4

He wept, fasted, and prayed.

Lesson:
God often begins His work by placing a burden in our hearts.
If a vision does not move us to prayer, it is not from God.

2) Prayer Before Action
Before speaking to the king, Nehemiah prayed.
Before starting the work, he prayed.

Lesson:
Prayer is not preparation for the work — prayer is the work.
When we pray first, God opens doors no one can shut.

3) Courage to Step Out
Nehemiah asked the king for permission to rebuild.
This was risky, but God gave him favor.

Lesson:
Faith requires bold steps.
God’s favor goes before those who trust Him.

4) Teamwork in God’s Vision
Nehemiah did not build alone.
He united the people for one purpose.

Lesson:
God’s work is always done together.
Unity brings strength. Division brings delay.

5) Opposition Will Come
Sanballat and Tobiah mocked and opposed the work.
But Nehemiah prayed and continued building.
Nehemiah 4:6
“So we rebuilt the wall… for the people had a mind to work.”

Lesson:
Opposition is a sign that God’s work is progressing.
Prayer keeps us strong when criticism comes.

6) Completion and Celebration
In 52 days, the wall was completed.
God was glorified, and the enemy was ashamed.

Lesson:
What God starts, He finishes.
Restoration always ends in rejoicing.

Application for Today
Let God’s burden become your vision
Pray before every decision
Work in unity
Don’t stop because of opposition
Trust God for complete restoration
Conclusion
Nehemiah shows us that praying hearts rebuild broken places.
God is still rebuilding:
Broken families
Broken churches
Broken lives

If He did it then, He can do it now.
Amen!
