How To Land Safely

1 Chronicles 22

By Keith Howard

When landing, the pilot announces that flight attendants prepare for landing, collecting garbage, putting tray tables upright, and turning off large technology devices. The cabin lights come on, indicating our near destination. Landing on solid ground, experienced travelers can discern the pilot without seeing them. A hard landing (Boom) shocks everyone, while a smooth takeoff and landing (No Boom) requires no parachute. Age and experience differ.

David made abundant preparations before his death (v. 5). He prepared not for dying but for building the temple. Years of preparation and gathering materials (vv. 3–4) had risked his life in battle, and he claimed the spoils for the Lord. Though known as a soldier, his heart was that of a builder.

David claimed God’s promise and used it to encourage his young son (v. 7). Our work is for God, and it must be our best.

Joshua 1:8 states, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.”

God’s Word encouraged and guided me, and His presence assured me of solid ground. If we obey Him, He’ll prosper our work. David’s wealth, over forty million tons of gold and silver, was meaningless without God’s blessing. We can’t do God’s work alone; we need helpers. Leaders, stonemasons, timber cutters—all were important.

  • A smooth landing, like a good leader, is prepared, experienced, and calm. A hard landing reflects inexperience and lack of control.
  • David prepared for the temple’s construction, gathering materials for years. He relied on God’s promise to encourage his son, emphasizing the importance of doing one’s best for God’s sake, which leads to prosperity and success. God’s Word provides encouragement, guidance, and assurance of His presence. Obeying God leads to prosperity in our work. God’s work requires teamwork and the contributions of different individuals with different skills.
