Scripture: Matthew 9:35–38
“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” — Matthew 9:36
Reflection
Jesus traveled through towns and villages healing, teaching, and proclaiming the good news. But He didn’t just do ministry — He noticed people. And when He saw the crowds, He didn’t just see their physical needs — He saw their hearts.
The Bible says they were “harassed and helpless” — literally, weary, troubled, tossed around by life. That may describe you today. Or someone close to you. These people weren’t just lacking knowledge or healing — they were lacking a shepherd. And that broke Jesus’ heart.
He didn’t respond with frustration. He didn’t tell them to get their act together. He responded with compassion. Deep, gut-level compassion. And then He said something surprising:
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers…”
Devotional Thought
Jesus connects His compassion to our calling.
When we see people the way Jesus sees them, it should move us — not just to feel, but to act.
So often, we look at the world and feel overwhelmed. But Jesus looks at the crowd and sees a harvest — people ready to be loved, guided, and restored. What He’s missing is not opportunity — it’s willing workers.
Questions for Reflection
1. Who around you feels “harassed and helpless”?
• Is it a neighbor, a coworker, a student, or even you?
2. Do you see people the way Jesus sees them?
• Or do you sometimes walk past the need, too busy or numb to notice?
3. Are you willing to pray — and go?
• Jesus asked His disciples to pray, knowing full well that they were going to be the answer to that prayer.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for seeing me — even when I’ve felt helpless, harassed, and far from You. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Open my eyes to the people around me who need Your compassion. Help me not just to pray for laborers, but to be one. I’m available, Lord. Use me today. Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Do you know someone that is being harassed or helpless then Ask, “How can I show them compassion?” Then do it. You might be the shepherd someone’s been hoping for.
